Retaining Wall System Case Studies

Tesco Bradford - Keystone Retaining Wall System

The challenge to create two retaining walls, up to 10 metres in height, to support a new retail store and car park some 23 metres above an existing railway cutting was met by Anderton Concretes Keystone dry-build system.

With restricted and difficult-to-negotiate access to the Bradford site, the systems’ ability to be built from inside the wall was a key factor, as it negated the need for expensive and complex on-site external formwork on the face of the cutting, which would have been necessary if a more conventional solution had been chosen.

Keystone was also the only system that was able to cut costs by enabling all of the retained earth to be site-won, with no need to import additional stone fill.

The walling units were locked into the retained earth with Tensar geogrids, typically placed every third course and locked to the units by purpose-designed, high strength, BBA-approved polymeric comb connectors.

With a total length of 250 metres, some 2,000 m2 of Keystone walling in Compac Classic format features in the two retaining walls, in a rugged, split-faced finish and Yorkstone colour, with additional feature bands in a Flint colour.
